"Reality U: A financial literacy simulation of the future for today's students"
Oct 05, 2021 12:00 PM
Patrick Sehl, Jr is the Director of Reality U at The Pando Initiative. Patrick connects to students across the state of Kansas in middle and high schools by championing the idea that their effort in school really does matter. By engaging students in an interactive way during Reality U, he assists them in planning for their future through learning about financial literacy. Patrick may be originally from the West Coast, but he has established roots in Kansas for the last 22 years. He believes it's easy to love the mountains or the beach but it takes a soul to love the prairie. He enjoys watching his boys play soccer and listening to his little girl play piano. He also just adopted a kitten from the Kansas Humane Society named “Maui” who is a 1 pound creature of pure raw fighting power. Maui is the runt of the litter and reminds him why he loves fighting for the underdog. Reality U brings a bit of “reality” to students through a 75-minute interactive and engaging personal finance simulation. Students imagine their life as a 26-year-old and complete an online lifestyle survey. This information is entered into our trademarked software, along with their current GPA, to create a unique and individualized future scenario. Each scenario includes the student’s monthly income, credit card debt, student loan information, as well as marital and family status. Students are given a checkbook register to track their monthly purchases from the 12 booths representing services and/or products that adults typically must purchase or consider each month. Sometimes they must return a “purchase” and make a different decision. The checkbook register can’t fall below zero! This event actively engages students to help them understand the importance of how their performance in school today impacts their future. It also provides the community an opportunity to share in local students’ learning and developing an understanding of the world of work. |

Fundraiser for Paxton's Blessing Box
Nov 02, 2021 12:00 PM
This meeting will be held at Venue 3130
3130 W. Central Ave. (don't go to RHCC)
Organized by Sean Babjak and Colby Reynolds
A local charity is chosen each year to receive the money we raise from this meeting to help those in need. The charity selected this year is Paxton's Blessing Box. The 87 red boxes that have been placed around Wichita, identified as "Paxton's Blessing Boxes" are used to fill with non-perishable food and hygiene products for those in need. Paxton Burns and his mom, Maggie Ballard, started the boxes after getting the idea 5 years ago on social media. Their motto is "Take a blessing when you need one and leave a blessing when you can!" These boxes need to be supplied regularly since they are actively used. Our club sponsored the installation of a Paxton's Blessing Box at Lawrence Elemenetary last year. Here's how our luncheon works: Some of our members have signed up to bring Chili, Soup, Dessert, Bread. (see list below) Members bring cash to the meeting and use $1 bills to vote for their favorites. Change will be available. The money received from the votes, along with the meal money we save from not eating at RHCC, will be donated to Paxton's Blessing Box to provide food for the needy. Crown Arts Collaborative
Mar 08, 2022 12:00 PM
Max Wilson is the founder and Executive Director of Crown Arts Collaborative (CAC), the 501(c)(3) nonprofit company responsible for the return of theatre, visual art, and film to the historic Crown Uptown Theatre. Max is a graduate of Wichita State University where he received his BFA in Musical Theatre and a triple minor in Communication, Business, and Political Science. He served as the office manager of The Crown Uptown Theatre from 2011-2015 and, after a brief stint in the finance sector, returned to the arts in 2018 to serve as the Chief Operations Officer of Roxy's Downtown. In 2020, Max returned to his favorite home for entertainment, The Crown Uptown Theatre, to see the company through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. With a vision of creating an organization that brings artists together across diverse artistic mediums, CAC was born. The organization's mission was inspired by the theatre's long history - a cinerama turned vaudeville house turned movie theater and dance hall turned dinner theatre. The space has been home to nearly every kind of artist and arts patron, making it the perfect home for CAC.
As the company enters its first full season, following a successful "Pre-Season" launch in September of 2021, CAC will produce a film series to feature Wichita's talented local filmmakers, 4 musicals (3 of which will be regional premiers), 1 play, and 1 dance spectacular. The company partners with a local restaurant, visual artist, and fellow nonprofit for every production to encourage community engagement throughout the industries of culinary arts, visual arts, and fundraising. In addition to theatrical productions, the art form for which the Crown Uptown is most famous, CAC has a long term plan to produce 1 feature film annually and intends to launch educational initiatives that will offer classes and camps in the fields of theatre, film, dance, and visual art. CAC hopes to bridge the gaps that exist within the Wichita arts community and to provide employment opportunities for artists of every stripe.
