ANNUAL SOUP LUNCHEON

Organized by Christy Barnett & Mindy Wagner

Nov 05, 2024 12:00 PM

Bring one dollar bills to cast votes for your favorites!

Don't go to Rolling Hills Country Club this week. Instead, join us at Starkey, 144 S. Young St., for our Annual Soup Luncheon. A map will be emailed showing where to park and enter the building. If you signed up to bring food, please arrive early to allow time to set up and don't forget to bring a serving utensil.

A little history about our Soup Luncheon...

Our club’s first Soup Luncheon took place on April 25, 2000, with the goal of raising funds and awareness for Hunger Plus, Inc., a non-profit relief agency dedicated to providing food and essential supplies for emergency situations and, for longer term projects, to improve food security — a project supported by Rotary International. The money we saved by not eating lunch at RHCC for that meeting was directed toward sponsoring shipments of dehydrated soup from the Breedlove Dehydrated Foods facility in Lubbock, Texas.

Initially, we prepared bags of the dehydrated soup for our luncheon, which, although nourishing, lacked flavor. To enhance the experience, John Mosley proposed a Soup Contest for the following year, inviting members to bring their own creative soups using the dehydrated mix as a base. By 2006, we evolved our approach, allowing our talented “chefs” to showcase their favorite soups without the mix.

Over the years, this event has transformed from a simple soup cook-off into a full-fledged soup, chili, and dessert competition with members casting $1 votes for their favorites, raising a few extra dollars for the project. In 2017, we decided to shift our donations from Hunger Plus, Inc. to local organizations, such as the Lord’s Diner and Paxton’s Blessing Box. Another recent recipient has been ShelterBox who is focused on disaster relief. They have now become the established beneficiary of our proceeds, largely due to the fact of our close connections since they are a Rotary International Project Partner, Ed Frey is the Rotary District  Coordinator for ShelterBox, and it is one of our club’s International Service projects.

RITE Teachers

Jan 28, 2025 12:00 PM

The RITE (Rotary Intercountry Teacher Exchange) program was started in our District by Ralph and Armida Hight in 1996. It began as a joint project of the Rotary Clubs of West Wichita and West Sedgwick County–Sunrise and has grown to involve additional clubs in our District, namely Downtown, East & Andover. The inbound portion of the project includes receiving teachers from Panama and Argentina for 4 weeks mid-January to mid-February. While here, they visit a wide variety of schools to learn our educational methodology and experience our culture through various community activities.  Our thanks to Dalia Hale (WSC- Sunrise Rotarian) and Shelli Kadel (former WW Rotarian) organizers of this project, and to those hosting the teachers! This year's hosts from our club include: Mark Hansen, Mark Hazleton, John Mosley and DeAnn Sullivan.

Ayelén (Aye) Usandizaga, 30 yrs old,  is from Baradero in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina and is a member of the Baradero Rotary Club. She is a busy and creative teacher of English at four schools and a private institute in her community. This experience has allowed her to work across all grade levels up to adults since 2013. Her passion for teaching English was learned from her much older sister who owns an English school. She is looking forward to learning new methodologies in teaching English. Her goal as a RITE Teacher is to promote peace between countries and learn about US culture. She also wants to interact with people and use her English. Ayelen loves to cook and spend time with her dog, Berni. She loves the beach and dancing in her folklore group.

Belén Morán Galvarici, 31 yrs old, is from Junin, Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is a highly professional and talented teacher who continues to learn to help her students at primary to university level adapt and excel in clever and self-inquiry methodologies. She is a busy and creative teacher of English in three schools in her community. This experience has allowed her to study and earn her credentials to teach elementary and secondary students. Belén’s goal for the RITE Program is to help her expand her knowledge about other cultures to share with students. She strives to grow from others worldwide and expand her teaching repertoire. She continues to create connections around the world. Belén comes from a big family. She is a dog lover and she loves spending time outdoors in her garden. She loves cooking (her favorite is Italian) and loves music and movies.

Esteban Almengor, 41 yrs old, is from David, Chiriquí, Panamá. He is an enthusiastic and determined educator with over 15 years of experience teaching English as a Second Language. He has worked with elementary students to students in higher education. He desires to keep improving his skillset as a teacher. Esteban is comfortable motivating his students through technology and creating educational content on various platforms. His student-centered approach helps him maintain a positive learning environment. He has received recognition for leading school projects that help his students. Esteban is married and has three children. He has volunteered in a recycling programs called “Bottles of Love” for kids and teenagers.

Dayra González, 42 yrs old, is from Dolega, Chiriquí, Panamá. She has been a teacher of English to elementary at three different schools for 24 years in the David area and has continued her education in higher education. She has become an expert in teaching English at the bachelor's and master’s level and beyond. Recently, she completed her master’s in management and supervision. Dayra is eager to participate in the RITE program because it offers an exceptional platform for professional and personal growth as an educator. She also believes that cultural exchange enriches learning experience and fosters mutual understanding which is essential in the context of language education. She is committed to sharing the insights and strategies learned while here with colleagues. She is hoping to return to motivate others and make changes as needed to help her school and community. Using Dayra’s words, “Learning new things every day is one of my personal goals. I like to be updated on the teaching field, and I also like to use technology in my classroom. I am sure this experience will provide more than I expect.” Dayra is a mother of an adult daughter and a teen son.

Chris Earl

KAKE Anchor

Mar 11, 2025 12:00 PM
Chris Earl joined KAKE News one year ago, in March 2024, but he's no stranger to the region.  As a Kansas City-area native, this was a welcome return to a region that he has always loved.

Coming from nearly 30 years as a news anchor and reporter, Chris has covered the triumphs and also the tragedies we all experience -- mostly recent Flight 5342 from Wichita.  It is in *those* moments that he believes we can have the most resonating impact -- how we, as reporters, work to reach with grace and perspective.  Striving to be right in our facts even if that means we're not the first.

It has been in those moments of "daily history", as he calls it, where he finds the most fulfillment.  Before Wichita, Chris was the evening anchor in Fort Myers, Florida --where he helped to guide hundreds of thousands through the devastation of Hurricane Ian.  Yet most of his career has been here in the Midwest, including in Topeka where he got his start.  He's covered everything from tornadoes to historic flooding to the pandemic and how Marine recruits get through basic training.

Chris is also a licensed drone pilot so whenever you see the aerials of Wichita or any other cities, he is proud to have likely been a part of that.

He has two grown children, a son who just graduated college and lives in Dallas -- he designs roundabouts in Texas so, if you don't like them, e-mail HIM.  Chris also has a daughter who is in police forensics while in college in Florida.

Jeff Horlacher

Rotary District Governor

Mar 18, 2025 12:00 PM
I joined the Great Bend Rotary club in 1991, and learned to love Rotary there.   They selected me Program Chair, and finding programs for the year proved to be a fun and interesting process.  I was a clinical psychologist then, and worked at the mental health center. I still have a passion for mental health issues, and was saddened to learn Kansas now ranks 51st in the nation in providing mental health care.  How did we achieve that?   They included Washington, D.C. in the rankings.  We can do better!   I moved to Colby in 1995 and joined Dad in the family jewelry store. Grandpa started the store in 1927, and I am proud to carry on the family business.

When in Great Bend I played on the Bonzai Bombers soccer team in the indoor city recreation league. I don’t recall we ever won a game, but a teammate interviewed us and reported on our games on the local radio station. It turned out the public loved hearing about our games, and complained when Randy stopped putting our games on at the end of his broadcasts. So, they resumed. You don’t always have to win to have fun.  I also pursued my enjoyment of bicycling, and rode Bike Across Kansas for 20 years.  I was also a route director for ten of those years. Dad shared his love of camping and backpacking, beginning with sleeping in a tent in the backyard as a child. I still enjoy exploring the mountains on foot. I have quite a collection of photographs from my trips, and have a camera with me most of the time.

I have been fortunate to travel the world, buying diamonds and colored gemstones in Europe and visiting a diamond cutting factory in China. I have been to five Rotary International conferences, beginning with the centennial in Chicago in 2005. I recommend all Rotarians go to at least one. It’s an eye-opening experience.

When asked “What’s your favorite music?” I have often been stumped. It depends on my mood at the time, and what life is presenting me at the moment. However, the best answer consistently has been “ballads.”   Whether they present in folk, rock and roll, country, religious or classical music, it’s the songs that tell a story that touch my heart and soul.  Among my life long favorites are sung by a man six years older than me, and his songs have touched hearts across generations and across the globe.  Many of his songs are autobiographical, and resonate immediately, and we rely on them for years. James Taylor’s hit “Fire and Rain” speaks of  a friend’s suicide, his struggle with addiction, and treatment in a mental hospital.    All are topics we have examined this last year in Rotary across the world, and mental health is not a focus Rotary nor I want to abandon.  Recent Rotary International Presidents have emphasized empowering girls and women, eradicating polio, and being people of action to achieve our goals.

We all should be cognizant of the seven areas of focus of Rotary International: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Disease prevention and treatment, Water, Sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health, Basic education and Literacy, Community economic development, and Environment. How do our projects fit in these areas of focus?

Our theme this year is the Magic of Rotary. We can make dreams come true, and together make the world a better place.  I look forward to witnessing the Magic of Rotary as your District Governor, and sharing my enthusiasm with you, and becoming infected with yours.

Let’s make the Rotary experience Irresistible! Let’s make Magic!
