"My Experience as a Rotary Exchange Student"

My name is Josie Bacon, I am 17 years old and attend Newton High School. I am the youngest in my family and have two older sisters. My older sister Kyndal plays volleyball at the University of Buffalo and my other sister is currently living in Colorado. My father works in the school district and my mom is a nurse at my local hospital. I have played volleyball, basketball and softball most of my life. When I graduate high school I plan to attend Hutchinson community college for two years and then go to KU to major in international relations with emphasis on the Korean language. In my free time I enjoy reading books, exercising and spending time with my friends. I had the awesome opportunity to study abroad last year thanks to Rotary and would love to share about my experiences.

ZOOM TIP: Mute, mute, mute!
One of the cool features of Zoom is the ability to mute your mic when you're not speaking. This is a vital thing to stay on top of because otherwise, as the speaker talks, they could be accompanied by the sounds of typing, dogs barking, other people talking, or other distractions. It's an easy fix. Mute is the first thing you'll see on the bottom left of your screen. Click "MUTE" to go silent but be sure to unmute when you want to talk. Another method to mute/unmute audio is using the space bar. For this, when you want to speak, press and hold the space bar to unmute the microphone and release it when done.

And don't forget to make sure YOUR NAME appears on your screen, not only for attendance purposes, but so we know who we are admitting to our meetings.
To Rename: Hover over your name, click More, and choose Rename and type in your name to change your screen name displayed to other participants.  _________________________________________

FOOD FOR OUR NEIGHBORS:
A ROTARY DISTRICT PROJECT
The District Leadership Team recently announced that they received a $25,000 grant from Rotary International for a Covid relief project. After discussion, it was decided to provide food once again for essential assistance to those in our District’s communities who need it most. The first round of this “Food for Our Neighbors” project was successfully done in June. It helped provide the most essential of services, while allowing all of our District clubs to be a part of a humanitarian project during a challenging time.        The food (processed meals from The Outreach Program in Des Moines, Iowa) was delivered to the Kansas Food Bank to distribute. This was the preferred process approved by our area club presidents. Now, for this second round of the “Food for our Neighbors” project, the District has asked clubs to pick up their allotment of the food and distribute it where they deem best. Assuming all 60 clubs in the District will participate, each club will receive about 30 of the Pantry Pack, 42 meal-serving, shoebox-sized boxes. A mid to late September delivery date is targeted, when family resources are often at the lowest point. At our Board meeting this month, the board discussed delivering the food to needy families at our adopted schools along with several options on how best to do that. Watch for further information on this project.
“This is a changing world; we must be prepared to change with it. The story of Rotary will have to be written again and again.”
--Paul Harris, This Rotarian Age, circa 1935
From rotary.org: "Rotary’s founder recognized the need for self-assessment and creative adaptation, perhaps even some experimentation, to create positive change in the world. The context of his quote was when he was reflecting on a tree planting in Chile — one of many during the trip, he noted that he thought of tree plantings as a symbol of good will, and hoped that the trees he had planted at home and abroad would stand for generations. But Harris also considered the tree plantings experiments, to some degree, and compared them to “all things new to Rotary.”

The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do:
  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
