FIRESIDE MEETINGS
PURPOSE: To provide an opportunity for members to showcase their business to a small group of Rotarians.
History of Firesides:  When Rotary first began, weekly meetings were held at members’ places of business, rotating from one location to another. This practice allowed members to become acquainted with each other’s vocations while encouraging professional exchange, and it gave rise to the name “Rotary.” Today’s Fireside meetings reflect this tradition, offering a glimpse into the fellowship and purpose of Rotary’s original meetings.
 
We have Fireside meetings scheduled for April 14 in place our club meeting. Hosts are responsible for arranging lunch, and our club will reimburse up to $15 per each Rotarian's meal.  If you are willing and able to host 6–10 Rotarians at your place of business, please let Diane know.
SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD
It’s time to nominate a fellow Rotarian for our club’s Service Above Self Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize a fellow Rotarian for the outstanding contributions they make to the community, our club, social, religious, educational, business ethics, and/or other worthwhile activities which make Wichita a better community.
Past recipients who are not eligible: Bob Goebel, Roger Bowles, Mike Ludlow, DeAnn Sullivan, Paul Blissett, Mark Hansen, Sharon West, Brian Goudie, Jamie Wise, John Mosley, Mark Chamberlin, Tony Morrow, Terry Gardner, Randy Bowles, Dave Abbott & Diana Fredelake.

The REASON you feel they deserve this award
Our Selection Committee, consisting of past recipients, will review all submissions to select this year’s winner. The deadline to submit is: March 4th
  
2026 HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP APPPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED
Up to five (5) $1,000 Scholarships will be awarded to selected qualifying high school graduates using the
following criteria:
• Current graduating high school senior from one of the following west-side schools: Northwest, Bishop Carroll, Maize, Maize South, Maize Complete, Goddard or Eisenhower.
• Plan to attend a Kansas technical school or Kansas college/university.
• Have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).
• Submit all required materials as listed below.
• Must not be an immediate family member of a current member of the Rotary Club of West Wichita.

WELCOME
New Member: Dennis Nguutu
                 
Dennis has transferred his membership to our club from the East Rotary Club and
was introduced at our meeting last week. Please join us in welcoming him!
 
My name is Dennis Mulu Nguutu, born in a small rural village called Masimba, Kitui county- Kenya. Attended my basic education in the village, then proceeded to college at Jomo Kenyatta University around Nairobi where I studied a degree in Agriculture. Later moved to Olathe KS to attend college in Johnson County Community College where I studied associate degree in science. I moved on to University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) to study pharmacy. I graduated with Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2011. I’m currently the Pharmacy manager at Walgreens on 21st & Maize.
I’m married to Dr. Lorna Nguutu, internal medicine doctor at Hutchinson Regional Hospital. Blessed with two daughters Nadia 9, and Nanelia 7, both students at Sunrise Christian Academy, Bel Aire, Kansas .
I enjoy mission work, and I’m the founder of The Nguutu Foundation www.nguutufoundation.com . Over the last few years we have been able to sink two wells around my home village to improve access to clean water, currently serving clean water to about 3000 people and animals, do medical camps, building a STEM lab in our village high school to expose village kids to technology. organizing to build a earth dam hopefully later this year to provide irrigation water, and other projects. 
I look forward to belonging to a community of likeminded people in my town.

Meet our new
Club Executive: Kim Barnes
As President Mindy announced last week, I will soon be retiring after more than 38 years as your Executive Secretary/Director. Kim Barnes will be stepping into the role of Club Executive effective February 1. We will be working closely together over the next few months to ensure a smooth transition. Kim’s background and experience make her an excellent fit for this position, and I am confident she will serve the club well. Please join me in welcoming Kim as she transitions into her new role.

HOLIDAY RAFFLE: Randy Bowles drew an Ace last week and won $18. No raffle this week since we are meeting off-site. Proceeds from the raffle are used to fund our Monthly & Holiday Grocery project so thank you for supporting this effort!    
The next STAR Class will be held on February 17, 11:30 am, and the topic will be "International Service".
