SUNFLOWER PROJECT UPDATE
by Dave Abbott
Our Zimbabwe Sunflower project has taken another step  forward. The project started out taking a group of subsistent farmers to form a cooperative to plant, harvest, and process sunflower seeds to livestock feed.  The original grant for $65,000 was used to purchase tractor and implements  and transport equipment  (we have $20,000 global grant remaining).  Despite several setbacks,  the death of the original host partner and the bankruptcy of one our cooperating vendors, we were able to raise an additional $7,000 to bring electricity to the plant as shown below.

FOUNDATION FUNDS
IN ACTION
IN OUR COMMUNITY!
Pictured for the check presentation: Kathy Collmann (Satellite member), John Oswald (requested the grant) Mindy Wagner (Pres. Elect filling in for Ed) & Sedgwick County staff.
The Kitchen Restore program is a community donation initiative with the mission of providing "starter kits" which includes gently used or new household kitchen tools and equipment to individuals and families in need. Their mission is to help individuals and families have the necessary items to prepare nutritious meals at home more often. Recipients are required to complete a nutrition education series through one of
K-State Research and Extension - Sedgwick County’s free nutrition education programs.
Our club, along with a matching Rotary District grant, was able to donate $5,000 to provide 40 kits.

WESTLINK LIBRARY EXPANSION PROJECT

Sample of one of the Wonderbooks that Mark Chamberlin checked out and will have at our meeting today for members to see.
At our last board meeting, at the request of Mark Chamberlin as a possible project for our club using Foundation funds, the board heard from Jaime Nix, Director of Libraries, and Kourtney Carson, President of the Wichita Public Library Foundation about the needs of the Westlink Library Expansion project. As a result, the board voted to approve a $5,000 donation to purchase a collection of Wonderbooks for the Westlink Library as part of their expansion project. A Wonderbook is a print book with a ready-to-play audiobook located on the inside cover. Children can experience the joy of a printed book while receiving the learning bonus of a book read aloud; more words heard means more language skills, kindergarten readiness, and reading skills. Each Wonderbook will have a bookplate acknowledging the contribution of the Rotary Club of West Wichita. In addition, our club will be pursuing an opportunity at the Westlink Library to for our members to participate.
