No club meeting due to COVID-19 quarantine.
MESSAGE FROM OUR CLUB PRESIDENT

Gooday Rotarians,

Thought of the Day: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storms to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”  This is a quote from Viviane Greene’s Book “The Storm”

This expresses so well the time we are now living.  There are those that lament how bad it is and then there are others who always find joy in what surrounds them and work at making a difference.  I have seen this modeled lately by DeAnn Sullivan and Mark Chamberlin in the creation of “Rotary Reads”.  This is project that started as a request from Marina, a librarian from Russia that knows DeAnn, for her to read a children’s story so it could be used by Marina in Russia.  This spawned the idea of having West Wichita Rotarians record themselves reading a children’s book so it can be posted on the Rotary Facebook and YouTube sites.  What a creative way to spend some quarantine time.  So far, three people have recorded their readings.  So, thank you DeAnn, and Mark for leading us in learning to dance.  I am encouraged by this and hope that the rest of you are as well.  As we anticipate the reopening of life around us, remember to live by the Rotary motto of the things we think, say, and do.

Stay safe, be well.

Vern Klassen

Just for grins...
  • Just asked a 6 year old if he understands why there is no school.  He said yes because they are out of toilet paper.
  • After years of wanting to thoroughly clean my house but lacking the time, this week I discovered that wasn’t the reason.
  • You’re not stuck at home, you’re safe at home. One word can change your attitude and one cough can change your life.
  • 2020 is a unique Leap Year. It has 29 days in February, 300 days in March and 5 years in April.
  • Wearing a mask inside your home is now highly recommended. Not so much to prevent COVID-19 but to stop eating.
  • If you keep a glass of wine in each hand, you can’t accidentally touch your face.
  • Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or should we just keep washing our hands???
  • I miss the days when we were terrified of Romaine lettuce. Ahh, the good times….
  • Whoever owes you money, go to their house now. They should be home.

ROTARY READS PROJECT
Mark Chamberlin sent this message to our members this past week:
As our club waits to safely reconvene we may be looking for ways to occupy our time at home. DeAnn Sullivan has developed an idea we're calling Rotary Reads. It involves making a recording of you reading a children's book to a child. It can even be your child or grandchild. Here is DeAnn's video

Join in the fun and post your video to our club's Facebook page. Here are some technical tips.
Pick a children's book.
Practice a couple of times to enable a confident performance. Don't worry about stumbling, that's part of the charm
Shoot in horizontal or landscape mode. It makes for a more pleasing image (no black bars on the sides)
Place your camera on a tripod or other stable surface.
Place the camera close to you at about eye level.
Tap the screen to set a sharp focus
Introduce yourself and the title of the book.
Have fun.
Reach out to me if you have any questions on the technical side.

From DeAnn Sullivan:
You don’t need to have a child or even a book to help with our new Rotary Reads project! Shelli has lots of children’s books if you need to borrow one. Marina, the librarian from Russia who requested the readings, demonstrates what she’s looking for in this video (no child required). You’ll have to translate for yourself! 😊 Marina's book reading project Check out Jon Roper’s video and meet his daughters and even the family dog! Rotarian Jon Reads
