Julie Stimson
Sedgwick County Emergency Management

Julie Stimson is the Sedgwick County Emergency Management Director.  Julie is responsible for building and sustaining disaster prevention, preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery capabilities for 21 local jurisdictions and a population of over 500,000 people.  Julie is a retired Air Force Veteran with 13 years of military public health experience and seven years experience in emergency management. 

Prior to her current position, Julie was the Associate Director of Safety and Emergency Management for the University of Kansas School of Medicine (Wichita) where she created a comprehensive campus emergency management, safety, and security program.

Julie has a master’s degree in Emergency and Disaster Management and is currently working on her PhD also in Emergency Management. 

Julie has experience with multiple volunteer agencies.  While active duty at McConnell Air Force Base, Julie volunteered with the Medical Reserve Corps and assisted with the Sedgwick County Measles outbreak response.  During the 2016 Eureka, KS tornado, Julie volunteered with the American Red Cross providing emergency shelter to those displaced.  Also in 2016 Julie served as the Red Cross Emergency Operations Center representative during the Mulvane flood and helped coordinate resources for those displaced.  In 2019 Julie volunteered with Team Rubicon on the disaster assessment team during the Linwood, KS tornado response and also volunteered at the Sedgwick County COVID drive-through test site.   

Julie brings both formal education and experience to the Sedgwick County Emergency Management team. Just recently, Julie was named the 2021 Kansas Emergency Management Association’s Outstanding New Emergency Management Professional on the Year.
