African Region Certified Wild Polio-Free

Dear Rotarians,

It our pleasure to announce to you that the African region has just been certified wild poliovirus-free.

Rotary members have played an invaluable role in the effort to rid the African region of wild polio. We should be proud of all the hard work that we’ve done to eliminate the wild poliovirus throughout Africa and in nearly every country in the world.

This progress is the result of a decades-long effort across the 47 countries of the African region. It has involved millions of health workers traveling by foot, boat, bike and bus, innovative strategies to vaccinate children amid conflict and insecurity, and a huge disease surveillance network to test cases of paralysis and check sewage for the virus.

THE GOOD APPLE AWARD

WICHITA PUBLIC SCHOOLS
SPRING 2020
The Good Apple Award program allows schools and administrative support centers to recognize employees, volunteers and partners who provide exemplary service to the district and its students. Award recipients are nominated and selected at the building where their efforts are most profoundly felt. Twice each year, principals and selection committees take up the arduous task of reviewing the nominations and selecting only three award recipients for their buildings. This year, our Rotary Club was a recipient of this award, nominated by Lawrence Elementary. This is what the Lawrence staff submitted with their nomination: “The Rotary Club of West Wichita has wrapped their arms around west side schools including Lawrence Elementary. They provide support for a variety of needs for our families, as well as support teachers and students through recognitions, books, bookcases, donations and a variety of other services.“

The award ceremony schedule for April 6 was canceled to protect the health and safety due to the Coronavirus.

BOOKSHELF DELIVERIES

We had a nice turn out of our members to help hand out bookshelves last week to the first graders at Lawrence and Benton Elementary schools! Our thanks to the Lawrence staff for treating us with a nice box lunch after the delivery! It's always fun to hear the comments of the 1st graders as they receive their bookshelf, 2 books and packet of decals. We heard many "thank you's" along with several boasting that they now have their very own bookshelf since their friends or siblings already have one. Some carefully decorated their new bookshelf with the decals, while others were anxious to start reading one of their new books.
Thanks to Mark Chamberlin for taking pictures and posting them on our club's Facebook page! To see more photos, go to: https://www.facebook.com/rotaryofwestwichita/photos

We've done lots of playground maps using a stencil of the United States. We just completed creating a stencil that will let us do a world map.
Next up will be to actually put a map on a playground. Anyone have a location in mind?
